My first week in the print rotation has
been really exciting and productive, which I put mainly to the fact that is has
been the rotation I have been looking forward to the most since starting in September. Throughout
this week, working in print, I have had the opportunity to connect back with my
love of drawing. Reflecting on the information I had gathering in feedback
week, I have spent time experimenting with a variety of different ways to draw
and represent, conducting a mass of drawings using a variety of black and white
media i.e. gouache, ink, charcoal, graphite and my personal favourite fine
liners.
Throughout the week in our timetabled
lessons we have been exploring the fundamentals of print design i.e. layouts
and compositions, devising colour palettes, learning how to efficiently draw and create
'motifs' by hand and how to create ‘motifs’ digitally, though the use of adobe
illustrator. Although I have had
experience in print design and screen printing in the past, I have never before
experienced the possibilities of illustrator, and creating motifs
digitally. Even though our first lesson was mainly aimed at grasping the
fundamentals of illustrator, I still enjoyed creating even simplE shapes and
motifs, as it displayed to me the possibilities and effects that digital design can
achieve.
Towards the end of the week in our Friday drawings session, we began to focus on the layouts of our motifs, using
thumbnails to create a series of compositions that individually represented a
stripe, all over or placement design. I
am looking forward to finalising my designs next week and taking them into the
screen printing rooms.
